Glossary of Information Technology (IT) Terms and Phrases

At the heart of every successful structure or solution is the foundation that supports and helps hold it together. The IF4IT believes the foundation of all IT solutions is an accurate, consistent and comprehensive language that can be used as a baseline for effective communications, planning, design, delivery and operations. It's for this reason that the IF4IT has spent many years compiling its Glossary before starting on other solutions. Composed of approximately 127,000 IT Terms and Phrases that link back to semantic roots, domain specific sub-glossaries, and their parent IT Disciplines, the Foundation's IT Glossary is the only one of its kind. We hope you find it useful. (NOTE: This Glossary grows rapidly so we recommend you keep a regular eye on it.)

What the IF4IT Glossary "Is" Intended to Be:

The IF4IT Glossary "IS" intended to be a centralized, thorough, public and freely available repository of Information Technology "Operations" (or "Operational") terms. By Operations/Operational we mean that these terms address how Information Technology resources "work" and the concepts they need to perform their work. The glossary consists of thousands of of terms that are consistent with how IT leaders lead and how IT workers work, across all industries. We're proud of the fact that the IF4IT Glossary is the most thorough operations glossary in the world and that it is constantly growing at a rate that outpaces any other glossry source that is available to the IT community.

What the IF4IT Glossary "Is Not" Intended to Be:

The IF4IT Glossary "IS NOT" intended to be a dictionary of terms relating to tools, technologies or specific methodologies. Our belief is that you can solve problems many different ways, using many different tools, technologies and methodologies. We recognize that endorsing one or more is transient and ineffectual, as such elements rapidly evolve and change, rendering past decisions useless. The goal of the glossary is strictly to focus on the elements of "work". Note that the IF4IT Glossary is also owned and licensed by the International Foundation for Information Technology (IF4IT) and has explicit guidelines on what you can or can't do with the content available in it, along with any and all other content provied by the IF4IT.
